Are you an on-the-road delivery driver at all times? You've probably wondered, “Can I Uber Eats in another state?”
If you have out-of-town family you are going to see, are on a long road trip, or are even moving, it's reassuring to know that you can still earn outside of your regular delivery region.
In this article, we are going to explain how it works for Uber Eats out of state, what you need to consider, and how you can best use your flexibility as a delivery partner.
Uber assigns you (as a delivery partner) to specific zones, usually by region or city in which you originally signed up. Your delivery areas assist Uber Eats in pairing you with orders, restaurants, and customers near you.
Once you are online in your permitted region, you will start receiving delivery requests when there is demand. This means you are not confined to one region for good.
In fact, Uber Eats is far more flexible than most drivers are aware. You can drive in other cities and even in other states, but there are certain rules and conditions you have to follow if you want to do this smoothly.
Keep in mind that not all drivers are automatically eligible to offer their services in all states or cities. Periodically, Uber Eats will prevent you from being able to see opportunities for delivery in a new city unless you officially alter your location in the app.
This prevents system malfunctions, keeps listings from being replicated, and is also a compliance initiative with local regulations (such as vehicle mandates or business licensure).
If you are going to be in the new state for more than a short-term stay or prefer the state switch to be permanent, we recommend that you update your profile within the Uber Eats app. This is how you can do it:
Open the Uber Driver app and go to the Help page. Tap "Account and Payment" > "Changing my account settings" > "Update my delivery city."
You are going to be asked for your new address and maybe new documentation, specifically due to the fact that you are crossing states with varying background check laws or delivery laws. You can get online in that region when you are accredited, just as you did in your hometown.
Before hopping on the internet and starting to take orders in a different state, there are a number of items that need consideration. First of all, states and municipalities have different demands.
For example, a large city like New York City is going to have bigger orders but also higher competition, while a small town is going to be slower but with stronger volume for fewer drivers.
Second, get familiar with the local traffic laws, bike lanes, and delivery culture. What is acceptable in Chicago might not be as applicable in Atlanta.
If you do decide you want to deliver by bike, make sure you are in a bike-friendly location with protected bike lanes and secure parking near restaurants.
And finally, monitor your income. Delivery wages are measured by distance, time, and need, and your salary can vary by state. While you are out driving, it's a good practice to experiment with a number of different zones in order to see where you can maximize your salary.
If you usually deliver by bicycle, you might ask yourself this thing when traveling. Luckily, the answer is that you can still deliver by bicycle in most of your other cities, as long as this means of transportation is allowed in the city in which you are going to be employed.
Bike delivery is very common in populated city areas like New York City, San Francisco, Boston, and Washington, D.C., where traffic is heavy and there is limited parking, meaning that it is getting harder for automobile drivers to move around comfortably.
In fact, there are cities that prioritize bike delivery so that operations can be easier.
That being said, you should also check that the city you are operating in allows e-bike deliveries and that you are eligible. This may include age restrictions, helmet requirements, or class requirements for e-bikes.
If you are trying to go online in another region, the Uber Eats app might deny you access. If this happens, don't panic. It is just a matter of your profile not being set up for that region.
Here, go back into the Help section of your app and request that your delivery city be up-to-date. You may also contact Uber Support for a faster resolution. Keep in mind that some background checks may take a day or two, especially if the new state has stricter safety policies.
If you are going into a neighboring state on a temporary basis, state this in your request. Uber does approve short-term access for seasonal employees, students, or tourists periodically.
Different states have different tax laws, so you may have to keep records of when and how much you worked in each state.
It is a good practice to have a miles tracker app or record your miles by hand, especially in case you will be claiming expenses on your tax return. And don't forget, whatever mode of transport, managing your deliveries is a case of thinking ahead and maximizing your long-term profits.
One of the reasons why people think Uber Eats is worth it is the freedom it offers. Having the capacity to serve in more than one state is a wonderful advantage for immigrants, students, part-time workers, and tourists since they are able to earn money on their own time.
